Rated voltage

MOVs are specified according to the voltage range they can withstand without damage. Other important parameters affecting varistors are energy rating in joules, operating voltage, response time, maximum current and breakdown (clamping) voltage. Energy levels are usually defined using normalized transients, such as 8/20 microseconds or 10/1000 microseconds, where 8 microseconds is the front time of the transient and 20 microseconds is the time to half value.

Capacitance

Typical capacitance range for consumer size (7-20mm diameter) varistors is 100-2,500 pF. Smaller low-capacitance varistors provide ~1 pF capacitance for microelectronic protection, such as cellular phones. However, these low-capacitance varistors cannot withstand large inrush currents due to their compact PCB mounting size.

Response time

MOV's response time is not standardized. Sub-nanosecond MOV response claims are based on the material's inherent response time, but will be slowed by other factors such as component lead inductance and mounting method. Response time was also deemed insignificant compared to a transient with an 8µs rise time, allowing sufficient time for the device to turn on slowly. MOVs have response times in the range of 40-60 ns when subjected to very fast <1 ns rise time transients.
